Charles Michael Canup

July 21, 1955 — October 3, 2022

Concord

Charles Michael Canup, 67, passed away on Oct 3rd, 2022. He embodied resilience, possessing and sharing an unrelenting optimism even in his last moments.

Charles proudly served in the US Army leaving the service briefly prior to ultimately joining the US Navy until his retirement. He was incredibly proud of having served his country and loved to talk with others about their commitment to serve. His decision to rejoin the service in the U.S. Navy played a pivotal role in his life. It was this choice that sent him overseas where, in a U.S Naval Base Dispensary in San Miguel, Philippines, he met his wife of 40 years and ultimately would become a father to two daughters and eventually a beloved Oji to Yukito.  The love he had for family, his wife Rose, his daughters Christine and Frances, and grandson Yukito brought him immeasurable joy.  His eagerness to share his love extended beyond his family and his commitment to nurturing others was sprinkled throughout his life, from his kickstarting a tutoring program with his fellow servicemen, volunteering for local schools in his retirement, playing amateur photographer, or being incredibly quick to open his home to others (he loved to have a full house). He led his family with heart, believed in investing his time in others and was particularly gifted with the art of listening intently and reminding us of the importance of perspective when he saw it was needed. His warmth and optimism will remain with all who knew him.

Survivors include his loving wife Rose Canup, his daughters Christine Canup and Frances Loren, grandson Yukito Loren, and sisters Christa Prevette (SC), Cynthia Elrod (SC) and Christine Giles (OK). Charlie was predeceased by his brother Jeffrey Canup (SC), sister Janet Hunter (SC), and parents Charles Ray and Frances E. Canup (SC).

No services are to be held at his time.
