Obituary: Agnes Love Gold Overcash, 88, passed away peacefully at her home in Cabarrus Co, NC on Monday, November 14, 2011.Born May 8, 1923 in Cleveland Co, NC she was the daughter of the late Clyde Putnam Gold and Pansy Obie Borders Gold. She was captain of the basketball team and Class Secretary, her senior year at Piedmont High School in Cleveland Co. After high school she attended National School of Commerce in Charlotte, NC where she met Carl Osborne Overcash from Cabarrus Co, NC on a blind date. They married 29 July 1944, at Zion Baptist Church, in Cleveland Co, NC, her home, a place she loved and never forgot, keeping in touch with friends and family up until her death. Agnes continued to work at Cleveland Cloth Mills during the war because she could not get a paying job in Cabarrus Co. By 1947 she embraced what became known as the Odell community, a job with Cannon Mills as one of William Cannon's secretaries and her new life as the wife of a dairy farmer. Agnes joined Gilwood Presbyterian Church in 1947 and was active in the church, as a member of the Presbyterian women she received an Honorary Life Membership in 1987. She served as an elder and a deacon. Agnes loved the outdoors and kept a flower garden for the flowers she took to her childhood home church 1st Sunday in May to remember her kin every year throughout her life. She helped her husband Carl on the dairy farm with milking and making hay, raised her children, worked as a 1960 Census taker, became a substitute teacher at Odell Elementary School, and lastly the job she liked best, she managed to be one of the first women hired as a Cabarrus County rural mail carrier. At one point, her Route 1, was one of the largest routes in Cabarrus County. This job she held for 16 years before retiring at age 71 in 1994.Agnes loved challenges; she believed she could do most anything. She learned to drive at 15 and she drove where ever she desired, whenever she desired. She was an excellent seamstress making clothes for the entire family. Her mother-in-law helped her learn to cook and she loved to feed people. Many came to love her cakes and biscuits. She strived for excellence in everything she did, she knew what work was, always ready to help do whatever was ask, never shrinking from any task. She continued to serve the community after retirement, delivering Meals on Wheels and becoming a member of the Poplar Tent Extension Club, following in her mother-in-laws footsteps to help the local community. Being proud of her heritage and appreciating family history she became a member of The Daughters of the American Revolution, while continuing her faithful participation in Gilwood Church. She enjoyed traveling with Carl and her Aunt Agnes (namesake) Maddux in the USA and faraway places, one trip took her to The Great Wall of China. At home she doted on her grandchildren whom she spent time with every chance she had and was always up for the next thing to do, helping others and trying to make life better for those around her. To the end, Agnes lived a faithful, good, and dutiful life, never whining or complaining, always an example for her family to be proud of, teaching each of us how to live and how to die.
