Obituary: Agnes Payne Schifando, 95, of Kannapolis, NC died Thursday, March 19. Although she had been in declining health for several years, death was unexpected. Mrs. Schifando was born March 18, 1920, in Kannapolis, the daughter of the late Marshall Memory and Edith Kincaid Payne. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dominic John Schifando, brothers Brandon Payne and Raymond Payne and sisters Margaret Ann Brooke and Betty Bodenheimer. Mrs. Schifando is survived by a daughter Laurie Guy (Barry) of Charlotte, a son Richard Schifando of Kannapolis and three grandchildren, Zachary Guy (Marjorie) of New York City, Lindsay Schifando of Cary and Samuel Schifando of Kannapolis. She is also survived by three sisters, Frances Walden of Bishopville, SC, Mildred Turner of Landis and Hilda Ellington of Chagrin Falls, OH, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Schifando met her future husband, a native of New York City, in Florida after World War II during the time she lived with a sister and worked as a stewardess on charter flights from Miami to the Caribbean. They were married in California on July 24, 1949, she wearing a family wedding gown and before a congregation of Sunday worshipers the couple did not know but who were invited to stay after the service for the wedding. They lived in California for several years before moving to Kannapolis where they remained for the rest of their lives. A memorial service for Mrs. Schifando will take place at two o'clock Sunday, March 22, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 416 East 1st Street, Kannapolis. The family will receive friends in the Ladies Parlor of the church following the service. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or to Cabarrus Meals on Wheels, 1701 South Main Street, Kannapolis 28081, an organization for which she volunteered as a driver for over 17 years and whose services she was blessed to receive during the last years of her life.
