Obituary: Almay Ellen Cassidy of Kannapolis, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Friday afternoon, August 29, 2014. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings; Mason, Arlie, Pearline, Essie, Birtal and Viola. Almay was born March 15, 1926 in Chesterfield, South Carolina, the daughter of Zadie Lee Cassidy and Rillie Eddins Cassidy. She was a beautiful young lady who grew up in the warm sand hills of rural South Carolina. She later moved to Kannapolis, North Carolina. This is where she made her home. Her gentle spirit was an inspiration to all who knew her. Her smile was genuine and her heart was always caring. She will be remembered for her kindness and especially for her love of all children, no matter who's they were. Almay was a lovely lady. Hers is a story of a life of service. Always giving of herself, she spent her life doing for others unselfishly. The role that gave her the most joy was mother. This was apparent in the devotion and love she showed as a mom. She was many things to many people, helper, teacher, friend, aunt, neighbor, mother, caregiver and nurturer. Yet, with childlike simplicity, she seemed amazed that everyone loved her so. She found happiness in being a homemaker and in raising two little girls who loved her beyond measure. Her greatest treasures on earth were these girls and a great many nieces and nephews, their families and her many friends, all of whom she loved dearly. Her sweet potato pies and soft, tender, flakey biscuits will linger in the minds of those who enjoyed the comfort and hospitality of her kitchen. She loved to watch old classic TV programs while cuddled in her favorite recliner. Tucked in with soft blankets, she was happy and content. Her favorite place to visit was Myrtle Beach. She looked forward to a yearly fall retreat. She found pleasure in sitting on the beach with her large hat and sunglasses just enjoying the gentle coastal days. We who were blessed to share her life will miss her. A great measure of sweetness just went out of our lives. Secure in the knowledge that she is safely home enjoying a long-awaited family reunion, we can cherish the wonderful memories and the extraordinary beauty of the life she left behind. The family will be receiving friends at Whitley's Funeral Home from 1:00 to 2:00 PM on Tuesday, September 2, 2014. Her funeral service will be held in the chapel at 2:00 PM with Pastor L.J. Mills officiating. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. Online condolences may be left at www.whitleysfuneralhome.com
