Aubrey J. Bragg, 95, resident of Kannapolis, died Tuesday, May 28, 2024 peacefully at his home with family by his side after a period of declining health.
A funeral to celebrate Aubrey’s “Home Going” will be held at 1:30 PM Sunday June 2, at Whitley’s Funeral Home with Rev. J.R. Beaver and Sandy Yow officiating. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home starting at 12:00 PM.
Aubrey was born March 9, 1929, in Madison County, GA. He was the eldest son of the late William Odell Bragg and Bertie Carey Bragg, who were share-croppers in North GA. He and his younger brother shared many adventures on the farm and his remembrances of those times and events were enjoyed by all during family gatherings and reunions.
He met his lovely bride, Sarah Frances Miller, at a church function in Kannapolis, NC. They dated for two years, before getting married and starting their family. In 1961 they joined and became active members of Jackson Park Baptist Church. He enjoyed singing in and leading the church choir. He served as a deacon, taught Sunday school, and served his community and others in mission and outreach. In retirement, he continued his love of serving and helping others, while working at Whitley’s Funeral Home, part time for twenty-four years.
Aubrey was skilled in several trades, and he attributes learning most of them from his tenure working in the sheet metal shop at Cannon Mills, and as assistant plant manager at Gamewell Mechanical. He was an excellent carpenter, brick mason, and all-around contractor. He put all of his expertise to use while building his own home in the mountains of North Carolina. When he wasn’t in the mountains, he also enjoyed camping at the beach, traveling with K-town Vagabonds, and he even visited all 50 states.
In addition to his parents, Aubrey was preceded in death by his brother Wayne G. Bragg and his son, Phillip Wayne Bragg and his former son in law, Whit Whitley.
Aubrey leaves behind his beloved wife of 75 years Sarah Frances Miller Bragg, his son Steven William Bragg of Deep Gap, his daughter Karan Bragg Whitley of Concord, his son Mark Clayton Bragg (Christi) of Huntersville, and his daughter in law Barbara Bragg of Mooresville. Aubrey is survived by six grandchildren of whom he was very proud: Matthew Bragg, Jason Earnhardt (Ally) Lori H. Whitcomb (Greg), Kristi H. Huntsberger (Dan), Elizabeth W. Carroll (Arthur), and Sarah W. Ciblak (Ali). He also leaves behind seven great-grandchildren: Owen Whitcomb, Aubrey Whitcomb, Jonah Bragg, Ty Earnhardt, Bo Earnhardt, Rosie Ciblak and William Carroll, his sister-in-law Ann Kay Bragg of Deep Gap, and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Online condolences may be left at www.whitleysfuneralhome.com and memorial donations can be made in his name to Jackson Park Baptist Church or Atrium Health Hospice & Palliative Care Cabarrus.
