Barbara Grimm Gerdes, 80, of Kannapolis passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2024 at Woodhaven Court in Albemarle following a period of declining health.
She was born July 9, 1943 in the Black Forest Region of Germany. She was the daughter of Georg and Herta Grimm. Barbara grew up in Bremen where she met Alexander Gerdes. After he moved to Miami Beach, she followed and worked as a cocktail waitress and nanny.  While living in Miami, Barbara and Al were married and had a son, Dean and a daughter, Jenny.  Barbara and family moved to Cullowhee, NC in the early 80s where she went to work as a baker at Western Carolina University.
Barbara moved with her husband to Kannapolis in the mid 90s, and she was employed as a baker at UNC-Charlotte for many years. She and her late husband enjoyed spoiling their grandchild, spending time with friends, dancing, and traveling back to Germany.
In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Alexander Gerdes, a son, Dean Gerdes, a daughter, Jennifer Gerdes and a sister, Ulli Stenzil.
She is survived by a Daughter-in-law, Donna Gerdes of Kannapolis, and a grandchild, A.J. Gerdes of Kannapolis.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 27th at 1:00 pm at Whitley's Funeral Home. Chapel conducted by Pastor Alvin Dixon.                                                                  .
