Obituary: Kannapolis - Bennie Ray Quigg passed on April 2nd, at his home in Kannapolis, surrounded by his family. He was formerly of Davenport, Iowa. Ben was born July 11, 1924 in Dewey, Oklahoma to Dorothy and Benjamin F. Quigg, who preceded him in death. The elder Quigg moved the family to Davenport to pursue his career with Dewey Portland as a machinist. Ben graduated from Davenport High School in December, 1943 and enlisted in the US Army to serve his country. After basic training, he shipped out to serve in the South Pacific. After returning from WWII, Ben met and married Bernice Finch and successfully raised a family. Ben and Beanie celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary October 9th of last year with friends and family. Ben's career was as a union electrician spanning 38 years, mainly in and around the Quad-City area of eastern Iowa and western Illinois. Ben's hobby was woodcarving and he was a talented artist. Ben is survived by his children; Constance Bhasker of Amarillo, Tx, Dr. Gary and Gennifer Quigg, of Kannapolis, NC, Mike and Sue Quigg of Glen Arm, MD and Todd and Wendy Quigg of Maryville, TN, two brothers, Robert Quigg of Mount Vernon, MO and James Gerald and Elissa Quigg of Sterling, Il. Ben has 10 wonderful grandchildren, ranging in age from 24 to 5 years old. The family requests in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Mt. Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department, 5875 Old Concord-Salisbury Road, Kannapolis, NC 28083 OR Parkinson's Group of the Carolinas, 601 E. 5th Street, Suite 330, Charlotte, NC 28202. The family would like to extend thanks to Hospice for their help and the Parkinson Support Group. A memorial service is scheduled for 4:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at the Whitley's Funeral Home Annex Chapel in Kannapolis, NC officiated by the Revs. John Wayland and Rob Roberts. Military rites by the Cabarrus County Veterans Honor Guard will follow in the courtyard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3:00 to 4:00 P.M. Saturday prior to the service.
