Betty Grogan Flinchum Cannon

January 8, 1938 — November 20, 2010

Obituary: Betty Grogan Flinchum Cannon, 72, of Concord died Saturday, Nov. 20 surrounded by her family at the Bob and Carolyn Tucker Hospice House. She was born January 8, 1938 in Rockingham County, NC, the daughter of the late Ernest and Susie Lawson Grogan. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, November 23 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Kannapolis, NC. The family will receive friends from 11am -1pm and the service will be held at 1:00pm. A private burial service will be held at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Eden, NC. Betty is survived by her daughter Melody Knox and her husband Tom of Concord, NC, her two sons, Todd Flinchum of New York, NY and Christopher Flinchum of Cleveland, OH, 3 grandchildren: Daniel, John and Jacob Knox and a cousin, Timothy Crater of Cincinnati, OH. She was a Business and Community leader in the Kannapolis-Concord area. She served on the board of CMC Northeast Medical, Habitat for Humanity the Arts Council of Cabarrus County and she led the fundraising efforts for the building fund for the Concord YMCA. Betty lived her life as a testament to her great faith, which was apparent to all through her generosity and works in the community. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Kannapolis, NC and for many years every Monday had a convalescent ministry taking flowers to nursing homes. She has been a member of the Salvation Army, Chair for the Healing Threads benefit, and a volunteer for Hospice. She was a faithful leader for the Lady's Bible Club of Motor Racing Outreach, the chaplaincy to the NASCAR community, and devoted herself to a mission to the orphaned children of the Masoyi tribe in White River, South Africa through Prepare International. Throughout her long illness, Betty's spirit and outlook never faltered. She lived her last months and days with the same dignity, strength, compassion and grace that had always been the bedrock of her character. Even in her last hours, she placed her concerns and care for others above her own needs. She was an inspiration to her children and to anyone whose life she touched. Her children would like to thank all of Betty's friends as well as many of the medical professionals that helped and stood by her over the last several years. A very special thanks must also be given to their father, Troy Flinchum of Eden, NC and to Tammy Childers, Jan McClarnon, and Michelle Foster of Concord NC whose loving care over the last year provided such comfort to Betty and her family. Memorials can be made to Prepare International for African Orphans or to Carolinas Medical Center NorthEast Foundation. Online condolences may be left at www.whitleysfuneralhome.com
