Betty Chastain Scarborough

Obituary: Betty Geraldine Chastain Scarborough, 85, of China Grove, died on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at CMC-NorthEast in Concord, NC. Mrs. Scarborough was born on May 18, 1927 in Madison Co., GA, the daughter of the late Luther Gene Chastain and the late Millie Scarboro Chastain. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Walter J. Scarborough who died on Nov. 8, 2011, two brothers; J.T. Chastain and Guy Floyd Chastain and a sister, Mary Parham. Mrs. Scarborough was a resident of this area for 71 years. She retired from the former Cannon Mills after 45 years of service working as a weaver. She was the last surviving charter member of Living Water Church of God where she faithfully supported the Ladies of the church in ever endeavor of church related service. She loved her church and was considered along with the other ladies of the church as the "backbone" in helping Living Water grow into the beautiful temple to God's love that Living Water has become. Survivors include her son, Larry Scarborough and wife, Judy of Burlington, NC, (4) grandchildren; Rodney Barnhardt, Daniel Barnhardt, Larry Scott Barnhardt and Christina F. Peters, by 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great great-grandchild. Mrs. Scarborough is also survived by a brother, Luther Junior Chastain of Landis and a sister, Lois Safrit of Statesville, NC. The funeral service for Mrs. Scarborough will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 28th at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Wade Easom and Rev. L.J. Mills. Burial will take place at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis. The family will receive friends from 12:30 - 2:00 before the service.
