Obituary: Billy Newell "Pawpaw" Burleson, 81, of Concord, passed away at CMC-Northeast on May 6, 2014. Bill was born on October 9, 1932, the son of Farley Jerome and Mary Burleson of Stanly County, North Carolina. He was raised in Thomasville, North Carolina at the Mills Home Baptist Orphanage. He served in the US Army for 2 years and was a Korean War Veteran. He was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. Bill retired in 1980 from IBM, was inducted as a Paladin in July 2002, an active member of the Gideons, and the N.C. Baptist Lay Witness Foundation where he won many souls for Jesus. He loved to sing and spend time with his family, enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, traveling to the mountains, and making his "famous" rib-top cedar chests. Bill will be remembered for his values, wonderful spirit, and the ability to make people laugh. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Ann High Burleson, of Concord; three daughters, Carole Morrison, Donna Mosley (Todd), Debbie Baker, of Concord; grandchildren, Lindsay Gaffney (Matt), Daniel Gurley, Shelley Klein (Tyler), Matthew Gurley (Alexandra), Haley Hamilton (Michael), Courtney Barnes (Jared), Sarah Mosley (Johnny), Paula Morrison, Clint Baker, Carson Mosley, Madison Mosley, all of Concord; seven great grandchildren; and sister Carmelita Wall of Winston Salem and several nieces and nephews. Arrangements for Mr. Bill Burleson will be held at Memorial Baptist Church in Kannapolis, North Carolina on May 9, 2014. The family will receive friends and family from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Memorial Baptist Church with the service following at 4:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Mr. Burleson will be laid to rest at Pitts Baptist Church in Concord, North Carolina proceeding the visitation and service.
