Bittle Oscar Deal

Obituary: Bittle Oscar Deal, age 97, passed away on Thursday, July 14, 2016 at the N.C. State Veterans Home, Salisbury, NC. He was born March 7, 1919 in Rowan County, NC, the son of the late Brunner B. Deal and Zeola Kimball Deal. He graduated from Landis High School in 1936. Bittle was employed for many years as a mechanic working at Wagoner Chevrolet and later at General Farm Equipment Company in China Grove, NC. Prior to his military service he had worked at the China Grove Cotton Mill. He was a life-long member at Mt. Zion United Church of Christ, had served as sexton of the church from 1971 to 2012, and also sang in the church choir for many years. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he unfortunately spent time as a POW in Germany during World War II. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Dare Wilhelm Deal who died in 1986; two daughters, Phyllis Ann Deal and Mary Helen Harrison; and four brothers, Elbert Deal, Bernard Deal, John Deal, and Ralph Deal. The funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 4:00 PM Sunday, July 17, 2016 at Mt. Zion United Church of Christ, China Grove, NC officiated by Rev. Mark Burns. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, China Grove, NC. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Saturday, July 16, 2016 at Whitley's Funeral Home, Kannapolis, NC. Survivors include his daughter, Nancy Goodnight & husband, Harold of Salisbury, NC; grandchildren, Virginia Carter of Monroe, NC; Dr. William Harold Goodnight III & wife, Sarah of Carrboro, NC; and Dr. Andrea Goodnight & husband, Steve Randall of Livermore, CA; great-grandchildren, Bryce Goodnight, Caroline Goodnight, and Zachary & Alysia Carter; two sisters, Eva Yost & husband, John of Mooresville, NC and Lala Lowder of China Grove, NC; brother-in-law, Glenn Stirewalt of Charlotte, NC; and many loved nieces & nephews. The family wishes to thank all the men and women who worked so hard to make his last years happy ones at the N.C. State Veterans Home. Your love and untiring devotion are gratefully acknowledged.
