Obituary: Blanton J. Smith, age 92, died Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at CMC-NorthEast, Concord, NC following a period of declining health. He was born May 24, 1917 in Texas, the son of the late Bowers Smith and Jesse Bonds Smith. He was employed in civil service as a crane operator with the Charleston Ship Yard retiring following many years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S.Army and Navy having served during World War II. He was also an active member of First Wesleyan Church, Kannapolis, NC. He was known by many family members and friends to be an avid golfer. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Janet (Bobbie) Crider Smith who died November 8,2009. The funeral service will be 11:00 AM Thursday, December 24, 2009at First Wesleyan Church, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Edwin Crisco and Rev. James Matchette. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC. The family will receive friends from 6-8 P.M. Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at Whitley's Funeral Home. Survivors include a son, Blanton John (Sonny) Smith & wife, Pat of Mystic, CT; a daughter, Rebecca Harrington & husband, Jerry of Winston-Salem, NC; 5 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Reba Fortner of Kannapolis, NC. The family would like to give special thanks to Wendell and Debbie Ray and daughter Jennifer for their loving help and support prior to and during this time.
