Bobby Wilkerson

Obituary: Bobby McKenzie Wilkerson, age 83, died Monday, January 16, 2012 at his home.He was born December 8, 1928 in Rowan County, NC, the son of the late Gilbert D. Wilkerson and Kathleen Verbal Wilkerson. Bobby was a 1947 graduate of J.W. Cannon High School. He grew up as part of the "ballpark gang" in Kannapolis where he and friends gathered baseballs at games.In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Wilkerson and R.C. Wilkerson; and three sisters, Lucille Dorton, Helen Cannon, and Pauline Beaver.Bobby was employed with the former Cannon Mills Company, later D.A. Moore Co. in sheet metal. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956. He is fondly remembered for his love of playing baseball and softball. He married his wife, Verna Patterson Wilkerson in 1947 having been married 64 years since November 1st. Bobby also loved to do crafts and sold crafts with his wife for his church, Keller Reformed Church, Kannapolis. He was always faithful to his church.The funeral service will be held at 12:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Robert Myers. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC. The family will receive friends from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home prior to the service.Survivors include his wife, Verna P. Wilkerson; a son, Rickard D. Wilkerson of Kannapolis, NC; a grand-son, Brian D.
