Obituary: Boyce Alexander "Tate" Hunter of 283 Elm Avenue, NW went home to his Lord on Monday, November 23, 2009 at the W.G. Hefner VA Hospital in Salisbury. He had been in declining health for the past six months and seriously ill for two weeks. A worship service to celebrate his life will be held Friday, November 27 at 11 o'clock a.m. at New Testament Independent Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Bobby Utley. The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 26 from 7 until 9 p.m. at Whitley's. Burial will be at Carolina Memorial Park. Mr. Hunter was born October 13, 1926 in Cabarrus County to the late Daniel Taylor and Maggie Measmer Hunter. At the age of 17, Boyce enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. He received the Purple Heart Medal for injuries received in action at Iwo Jima. He was married to Peggy Jean Fur Hunter on June 11, 1949. Boyce was employed as a delivery man for Bitsy Baker in Kannapolis. In later years he worked with his son, Terry, and wife to clean various businesses in the Rowan/Cabarrus County area. He was a founding member of New Testament Baptist Church in Concord and remained active in church life until his health began to decline. Mr. Hunter was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy who died March 3, 2008; his parents, and a brother, Gerald L. Hunter. Surviving are two sons, Mike Hunter and wife, Kathy; Terry Hunter and wife, Bonnie all of Kannapolis; four grandchildren, Amy H. Bostian and husband, Alan of Hickory, Kathryn H. Murph and husband, Nathan, of Landis; Michael T. Hunter and wife, Susan of Bluffton, South Carolina and Sarah Hunter and fiancé, Matt Icard of Kannapolis; five great-grandchildren, Caleb, Noah, and Catilyn Bostian and Kaylee and Taylor Murph. Memorials for Mr. Hunter may be made to New Testament Independent Baptist Church, 5140 Irish Potato Road, Kannapolis, N.C. 28025. The family would like to offer a special thanks to Grady Lomax, Billy Kiser and members of New Testament Church who reached out to Tate in Christian love over the past years and helped in his care. Whitley's Funeral Home is serving the Hunter family.
