Burnett Simmons Lester, 74, also known as “Bunnie” or “Bonnie,” a beloved grandmother, mother, wife, dedicated professional, and passionate Virginia Tech football fan, passed away peacefully at her residence on December 6, 2024.
Born in Lumpkin, GA, and raised in Florida, Burnett was a woman of great faith, sense of style, grace, strength, and an unwavering love for her family and community. She devoted over 25 years of her career to BB&T, where she was known for her reliability, warmth, and commitment to excellence. After her tenure at BB&T, she continued to inspire those around her during five rewarding years of service at Virginia Tech, a place she held close to her heart as a devoted Hokies football fan. She loved western movies and was a fan of Yellowstone.
Above all, Burnett cherished her role as a grandmother to her two adored grandchildren, Izabellah and Zhane Lester. Her love for them was immeasurable, and she took great pride in their achievements and dreams. Her legacy of kindness, perseverance, and devotion will live on through them.
Burnett will be remembered for her infectious smile, her ability to make others feel seen and valued, and her enduring love for her family, friends, and community. Her presence was a gift to all who knew her.
Burnett is survived by her husband of over 50 years, Thompson V. Lester Jr., Kannapolis, NC; son Thompson V. Lester III of Charlotte, NC; daughter-in-law Jennifer Lester, Charlotte, NC; granddaughter Sgt. Izabellah Mabett Lester, Charlotte; grandson Zhane Lanning Lester of Mint Hill, NC; two brothers: Michael Simmons (Barbara), Leesburg, FL, and Jessie Tolbert Jr. (Jessica), Eustis, FL; two sisters: Jenice Edwards, Leesburg, FL, and Christine Walton, Frederick, MD. She was preceded in death by her second mother, Willie Nell Tolbert; and sisters Harriet Boatwright and Olivia Tolbert.
A celebration of Burnett’s life will be held on Wednesday December 18, 2024 at Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, 1748 Dale Earnhardt Blvd. Kannapolis, NC 28083 from 11AM -1PM.
A gathering for immediate family and friends will be held 6616 Clark Creek Parkway, Charlotte NC 28269 from 2PM-4PM. Friends and family are invited to attend and share memories of a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her.
