Carl Wesley "Spanky" Carpenter, 75, of China Grove died December 26, 2021 at Atrium Health Cabarrus after a period of declining health.
A memorial celebration of his life will be held Saturday, January 1, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Landis Baptist Church with Pastor Mike Austin and Jay Moon officiating. The family will receive friends at the church after the service.
He was born on October 25, 1946 in Cabarrus Co., the son of the late Carl Vinson and Ruby Irvin Carpenter. In addition to his parents, Spanky is preceded in death by his sister, Pat Morgan and his daughter, Donya Carpenter McCoy.
Spanky was a lifelong area resident and longtime active member of Landis Baptist Church, where he taught sunday school, drove the church van, directed the youth group and served as sound man for services. In earlier years, Spanky was a produce manager at the local FoodLion. Later he owned his own cabinetry shop.
He served the community as a foster parent with his wife Shelby; together they were foster parents to over 50 children. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Spanky will be dearly missed.
Spanky is survived by his wife of 45 years, Shelby Lynch Carpenter of the home, his daughters, Dia Stevens of Kannapolis and Emily Hall of the home. Spanky had three granddaughters; Brooklyn Wyatt (Cody) of Concord, Leah Wheeler (Tyler) of Granite Quarry and Kinsley Brown of Kannapolis and 2 great-grandchildren; Sebastian Wyatt and Callie Wheeler. Spanky was also survived by his sister Kay Bunton (Eddie) of Selma NC.
