Cecil Herbert Richardson, 92, of Charlotte, passed away on Monday, July 19, 2021, at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis. Cecil was born on July 27, 1928, in Monroe, to the late Herbert Richardson and Lola Newman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Mildred Chambers Richardson, and his daughter, Denise Hockaday, as well as one brother, two half-sisters, and one half-brother.
He spent a decades-long career with Southern Life Insurance (now Liberty Mutual) in Durham, winning a spot each year on annual company reward trips for his stellar sales. In retirement, he faithfully and lovingly cared for his wife for many years, as she battled an extended illness.
Cecil loved to joke, laugh, dance, and sing, and was passionate about his Christian faith and loved church fellowship. He loved listening to music and watching (and quoting!) funny movies. He made the most of every moment, and especially enjoyed traveling and dining out. Hundreds of trips to Myrtle Beach and dozens to Cabo San Lucas were documented by countless photos, which Cecil loved taking and looking at often. Cecil loved to be surrounded by people, and seemed never to meet a stranger. He was gracious, kind and generous, and always grateful for any kindness shown to him.
Loving family members left to celebrate his memory include his daughter, Barbara Burg, and her spouse, Meredith Thompson, of Charlotte, with whom he spent his last seven years; grandson, Steve Burgess, and his wife Becky Burgess of Wake Forest; great granddaughters, Cecilia and Caroline Burgess; brother, Kenny Richardson of Ft. Myers Beach, Florida; and half-brother, Morris Richardson of Creedmoor.
An outdoor service honoring Cecil’s life will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, August the 8 th , at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Charlotte.
In memory of Cecil, the family invites you to donate to your local hospice organization or other charity of your choice.
