Obituary: Kannapolis, NC Charles Litten Dayvault, 83, of Kannapolis died Thursday, June 17, 2010 at CMC-NorthEast. He was born June 29, 1926 in Rowan County, the son of the late Charlie Marks Dayvault amd Ruth Litten Dayvault. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha "Polly" Allman Dayvault on Oct. 20, 2007 and his brother Mearl Dayvault. Charles was a descendant of a Kannapolis pioneer family. Paul Dayvault, his granddad, owned and farmed the Dayvault family farm where the former Cannon Mills Plant 1 and Lake and now present Core Lab stands. He began working at age 11 at Dayvault's Esso Station, then at Beaver Lumber Company, Cannon Mills, Akers Motor Lines , Bob and Chick Esso Distributors and then at Propst Brothers Distributors retiring in 1991. After meeting in Kannapolis Town Park in the early 1940's, he married Martha "Polly" Dayvault on Oct. 21, 1945. He was a member of North Kannapolis United Methodist Church where he was involved in many church activities through the years. In fact, he was helping build the roof of the church when he was called down to go attend the birth of his son, Gregg. He volunteered as a special deputy with the Rowan County Sherriff's Dept. for 20 years under Sherriff John Stirewalt. He had a love for being with his family. He enjoyed looking for old car parts, signs, old radios, arrowheads, etc. with his son and grandson for many years. In earlier years, he loved racing and working on old cars with his brother-in-law, the late Bud Allman. Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Saturday at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Rev. Sarah Weaver. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 PM Friday at Whitley's. He is survived by his son, Gregg Dayvault and wife, Leslie, his grandson Ryan all of Kannapolis , two special nephews Frank and Wayne Dayvault both of N. Myrtle Beach, SC. and special friends Larry and Judie Jones and Ralph Deal. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Charles L. Dayvault Memorial Fund at the UNC Nutrition Research Institute, 500 Laureate Way, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
