Charles Wayne Mitchell

Charles “Wayne” Mitchell, 82, of Kannapolis, passed away September 2, 2024, at his home after a period of declining health.

A memorial service celebrating Wayne’s life will be held at Whitley’s Funeral Home at 12:00 pm, on Thursday, September 12, with Rev. Stephen Autrey officiating. Inurnment of cremains will follow at the Salisbury National Cemetery Annex at 2:00 PM Thursday with Marine Corps honors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home the hour prior to the memorial service.

Wayne was born June 22, 1942, in Cabarrus County, a son of the late Charles E. and Mary Ella Coble Mitchell. In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his brother, Terry Lane Mitchell and his nephew, John Ivey Mitchell.

A lifelong area resident, Wayne was a graduate of A.L. Brown High School and a longtime member of N. Kannapolis UMC. Wayne was a proud veteran of the US Marine Corps, serving during the Vietnam War from ’63 to ’67. After the war, Wayne worked for Cannon Mills/ Pillowtex as a carpenter. After the mill closed, he worked as a superintendent for Cabarrus and Graham Construction Company.

Wayne was a family man first and foremost. He loved his family and had a sense of duty to care for them. He was also an outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as camping at the beach. He loved bowling and golfing and was also an avid woodworker, creating USMC mementos that he gifted out to any veteran he met. He loved to watch boxing, football, the Atlanta Braves and old westerns on TV. Wayne was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be dearly missed.

Those left to cherish Wayne’s memory include his wife of 57 years, Saundra Beaver Mitchell of the home, his sons, Chad W. Mitchell of Kannapolis and Todd Mitchell (Kelly) of Concord and his grandchildren, Landon, Bryson, Katie and Eli Mitchell.
