Obituary: Charles Wesley Spears, Jr., age 77, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at CMC-NorthEast, Concord, NC. He had been in declining health for some time. He was born June 3, 1935 in Cabarrus County, NC, the son of the late Charles Wesley Spears, Sr. and Ruth Petrea Spears. He was a 1953 graduate of Winecoff High School. Later, attended N.C. State and graduated from Catawba College. After receiving his B.A. degree he furthered his education at UNCC and N.C. A & T University. He was two classes short of getting his doctorate. Charles was an active member of Parkwood Baptist Church, Concord, NC where in his earlier years taught the college students. In later years he taught the #2 Mens Sunday School Class for over 30 years. And he also served many years in the Deacon ministry. In earlier years Charles was employed with Rowan County Schools, later in the Carteret County Schools from 1961 to 1967. He moved back to the Cabarrus County area where he taught with the Kannapolis City Schools. There, he taught Driver Education, Math, and Science for many years until his retirement in 1995. Charles also was known for other skills. He was a carpenter, mechanic, plumber, and had worked several years in the summer at the former Cannon Mills Company. He is fondly remembered for his outside pastimes enjoying hunting and fishing. He was an auxiliary policeman, chief of the Beaufort Rescue Squad, training officer for the fire department, and head of civil defense, all in Beaufort, NC. He was also a member of the Civil Air Patrol of Cabarrus County during high school and college days. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 17, 2012 at Parkwood Baptist Church, Concord, NC officiated by Rev. Michael Waters and Rev. Darrell Coble. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC. 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 17, 2012 at Parkwood Baptist Church.The family will receive friends from 5-9:00 p.m. Thusday at the church. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Mary Taylor Spears; his children, Charles W. Spears, III of Maryland, one daughter, Angie Norris & husband, Mike of Kannapolis, NC and Judson Scott Spears & wife, Kellie of Mt. Pleasant, NC; his grandchildren, Jessica Helms, Seth Spears, Caleb Spears, Kaci Spears, Brianna Spears, Evan Spears, and Michael Norris; and one great-grandchild, Elizabeth. Memorials may be made to Parkwood Baptist Church, 1069 Central Drive NW, Concord, NC 28025.
Visitation: 5:00-9:00 P.M. Thursday August 16, 2012 Parkwood Baptist Church

Service: 11:00 a.m. Friday August 17,2012 Parkwood Baptist Church

Interment: Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
