Charles Thomas Spry, 93, went peacefully, at home, to be with his Lord and Savior August 17, 2019.
Born December 24, 1925 in Kannapolis, Charles was the son of the late A. H. (Hill) Spry and Myrtie Hellard Spry.
Drafted as a senior out of high school, Charles served two years in the Navy during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Hancock based in Pearl Harbor. He returned to Kannapolis and graduated high school from J.W. Cannon High School. Charles excelled in all sports especially baseball, volleyball and bowling. He enjoyed watching sports and was a big Atlanta Braves and Carolina Tarheel fan.
Early in life he worked for Cannon Mills and eventually moved on to work for Duke Power at Toddville Warehouse in Charlotte as the Manager of Stores Services where he retired after 32 years. In retirement he enjoyed morning walks and having coffee with his buddies at Carolina Mall. A quiet man of few words, family and friends could count on him when needed. He loved Jesus, loved his family, always had a smile, was content and peaceful throughout his life. He enjoyed family vacations, especially at the beach. He loved Life. He was a long-time member of North Kannapolis Methodist Church and in later years actively attended Hickory Grove Baptist Church Mallard Creek Campus. Charles was preceded by his parents, five brothers Raymond, Bob, L.R. (Mutt), Carl, Frank and two sisters Ruth Spry Veach and Dot Spry Hauss.
He is survived by the love of his life for almost 69 years Jacqueline (Jackie) Troutman Spry, daughter Jane Spry Cecil, son-in-law Allan who Charles considered his son, two brothers Jerry (Judy Spry) and Wayne and one sister Phyllis Spry.
The family would like to especially thank his devoted caregivers, Nicole (Nikki) Roberts and Gwynette (Gwyne) Cannon for their love and care of Charles over the last three months. The family also wants to thank all the nurses, aides and support personnel with Hospice of Cabarrus County.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, Aug. 21, at Hickory Grove Baptist Church Mallard Creek Campus, Charlotte, NC from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The funeral will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the church, with Pastor Kyler Smith and Pastor Ric Blazi officiating. Entombment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park in the Chapel Mausoleum, 601 Mt Olivet Rd, Concord NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County or Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Charlotte NC. Whitley’s Funeral Home is serving the Spry family.
