Obituary: Charles Eugene Vance, Jr., age 53, passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at his home after an illness. He was born December 31, 1962 in Caldwell County, NC, the son of Charles Eugene Vance, SR. and Deanna Jean Lofty. Charles had traveled the world collecting items from around the world. He was also a history buff and loved going deep sea fishing. His military service included serving in the U.S. Army as part of the BN 59th ADA as an E5 from 1980 until 1986 at which time he continued in the Army Reserves until 1989. He received three Army Commendation Medals; got a Certificate of Recognition of Service during the Cold War; also the Cold War Medal for Honorable and Meritorious Military Service; the Presidential Unit Citation Commemorative Medal; the NATO Service Commemorative Medal; the Overseas Service Commemorative Medal; and numerous other awards and commendations. After service he worked for NorthWest/KLM Airlines as a ground and flight operations technician. A military graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, August 19, 2016 at the National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday, August 18, 2016 at Whitley's Funeral Home Annex Chapel, Kannapolis, NC with a short memorial service held at the end of the visitation period. Survivors in addition to his parents includes a son, Brian Keith Vance of Concord, NC; a daughter, Amanda Jean Vance of TN; a brother, Curtis Allen Vance of Kannapolis, NC; and two sisters, Melissa Vance Smith and Ashley Diane Vance, both of Concord, NC.
