CHARLES LUTHER POWELL, SR. “BUTCH”

Charles Luther Powell Sr. “Butch”, 74, of Kannapolis, passed away Friday, January 8, 2021 at Atrium Health after a brief illness. He was born September 5, 1946 in Madison, WV and attended Scott High School.
Butch retired from the military after 28 years as an E7 SFC three tour Vietnam Veteran. He also retired after 28 years from Phillip Morris. Butch was a member of West Point Baptist Church for 37 years. He served with his wife Marsha with Campers on Missions for 15 years. Other life interest included being a coach to his sons’ ball teams, serving a term as Deacon for his church, leading a boy scout troop, earning his Blue Belt in karate and being an avid camper.
Butch’s family came second only to his Lord and Savior. He was a husband of 53 years, father of three sons, papaw of seven grand kids, and papa of ten great grand kids.
He is preceded in death by his Mother, Opal Pauline Powell; Father, Harold Ray Powell; Grandparents, Charlie and Brookie Powell (by whom he was raised); Step Mother, Jessie Barker Powell; Sister, Patti Sue Powell Ellis; and Son, Christopher Shawn Powell.
Those left to honor his legacy are Wife, Marsha Ann Frazier Powell; Sons, Charles Luther Powell, Jr. (Wendy) and Ashley Ray Powell (Deidre); Sister, Debbie Powell Perdue (Jesse); Brother, Harold Douglas Powell (Debbie); Grand kids, Josh (Candace), Evan (Heather), Cory (Alexandria), Caleb, Bryant, Brock, and Angel (Mark); Great grand kids, Guage, Jayson, Aaliyah, Anastasia, Kaydence, Elijah, Katurha, Colby, Bella, and Ryland.
Visitation will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at West Point Baptist Church with the service to follow at 12 noon conducted by Pastor Eddie Willis with special speaker, Bill Wilson. Whitley’s Funeral Home is serving the Powell family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Baptist Children’s Home of NC. Online condolences may be made at whitleysfuneralhome.com.
