Obituary: Christy McKinney King of China Grove, NC died at her residence on Tuesday, May 19, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Terry L. King, in 2008. Born August 22, 1951 in Concord, She was the daughter of the late Wylie L. and Ruby Bentley McKinney of Kannapolis. Her brother, David died in 2003. Her grandparents were the late James Miles McKinney and Nevada Hulsey McKinney and the late Cordie Anna Bentley and Charlie Bentley of Kannapolis. A 1969 graduate of A.L. Brown High School who attended Western Carolina University, Mrs. King worked for many years first in the executive assistant field, then later in accounting and computer operations management; until health problems forced her to leave the work force in 1990. While in school she was a member of the band and served as a majorette and flag girl, various club and committees, a Kannapolis City Schools Spelling Bee winner, and the junior class play. She was awarded a NC Teachers Scholarship upon graduation from high school. After leaving work, she devoted her time to her family. Mrs. King was an excellent cook and enjoyed making meals for the entire family. She was also a seamstress and enjoyed making clothes, formal gowns, craft items, and especially Halloween costumes for her children and grandchildren. She was a former member of the Kannapolis Jaycettes and worked with the Special Olympics, treasurer of the South Rowan Band Boosters for 3 years, and was instrumental in planning and raising money for the South Rowan Band to go to England and Ireland in 1997 to march in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Dublin, and for the band to go on a cruise to the Bahamas to perform in Nassau. Mrs. King was a lifetime member of Center Grove Lutheran Church in Kannapolis and was active while growing up in the choir, Girl Scouts, and the church youth group, and Vacation Bible School. She is survived by two daughters, Lori Plummer Scercy of Mooresville, and Allison King Ballard and husband Chad of China Grove, one son, Terry L. "Jamie" King, II and wife Miranda of China Grove, eight grandchildren: Bryan, McKinney Scercy, Kasey Scercy, Jazmyne Scercy, Skylar McKinsey Ballard, Corbin Ballard, Whitney Watts and Jeffrey Watts, Kailynn King and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Per Mrs. King's request, there will only be a private service with entombment at Carolina Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, as Mrs. King was a great lover of animals, memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Rowan County, 112 West Innes Street, Salisbury, NC 28144.
