Obituary: Cirven Chavis, age 80 of Liberty Commons in Salisbury for the past 5 years, but formerly of China grove died Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009 at Liberty Commons Nursing Center. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, November 21 at Grace Covenant Church in Kannapolis with Rev. Glynn Weatherby, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Grace Covenant Church from 2 to 3:00 PM prior to the funeral at other times they will be at 240 Tranquil Lake Dr. in China Grove at the home of Kenny and Donna Chavis. Cirven was born on December 17, 1928 in Orangeburg, SC to the Late David and June Bryan Chavis. A long time area resident, Cirven was Veteran of the US Army during the Korean Conflict and a member of Grace Covenant Church. He retired in 1990 after 45 years of service to Owens Illinois Box Factory in both Salisbury and Florida. Cirven loved to hunt, fish and spend time in the outdoors and with his family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ailleen Stiller Chavis who died in 2004 and by his brother in law, Homer Lee "Sonny" Stiller, and also by 4 brothers and 1 sister. Survivors include his daughter, Pamela Chavis (Ray Overby) of Concord and his son Kenneth Chavis and wife, Donna of China Grove; and his grandson, Parker Chavis. He is also survived by sisters, Mazel Tidmore and Patricia Clark, both of Tuscaloosa AL and June Evans of Adamsville AL and his brother, Bob Chavis of Brookwood AL. His family wishes to express special thanks to the care givers and staff of Liberty Commons for the love and care Cirven received over the past 5 years of residence at Liberty Commons; and to the nurses of Liberty Hospice for the comfort care given to Cirven this past week.
