Clifford "Bill" Mccorkle, Jr.

Obituary: Clifford R. "Bill" McCorkle Jr., 83 of China Grove, died at his home on Sunday, February 12, 2012. He had been in a period of declining health for the last year. Bill was born on April 11, 1928, in Rowan County a son of the late Clifford R. Sr. and Edith Yost McCorkle. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by 2 brothers, Henry and Sam McCorkle and 2 sisters, Evelyn Overcash and Kathryne Beaver. He was a graduate of Landis High School, and served in the US Navy during the Korean War. Bill worked many years for D.C. Linn Construction, and several years for Narvie Bonds Construction Company. He was founding member of Enochville Fire Dept., and served on the board until his death. He was a member of the Lions club for over 50 years. He was a lifelong member of St. Pauls United Church of Christ where he served on several different committees. He helped build several homes for Habitat for Humanity and enjoyed farming after retirement for as long as his health permitted. Bill was affectionately known as "the mayor" of Enochville. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at St. Pauls United Church of Christ with Rev. Phred Causey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at St. Pauls United Church Of Christ. He is survived by his wife, Lois D. McCorkle with whom he has been married to for 57 years, 3 daughters, Lisa Gantt (Jerry) of Houston TX, Debra Currie (Jeff) of Mooresville, and Ann Miller of China Grove, 2 brothers, Harold McCorkle (Betty) of Rock Hill, SC., and Jerry McCorkle (Mary Lee) of Salisbury, 1 sister, Ruth Westmoreland of Huntersville, 2 grandchildren, Andrea Julian (Warren) of Shelby, Michael Currie (Kayla) of China Grove, 2 great grandchildren, Ansley Julian and Kennley Currie, and a number of nieces and nephews.
