Obituary: Mr. Curtis Eugene "Gene" Ray, 64 died Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at his residence following a short illness. He was born March 3, 1947 in Cumberland County, NC a son of the late Rufus Ray and Minnie Elizabeth Kirkley Ray Williams. Mr. Ray was of the Methodist faith. In early life he worked for Big Star and Colonial Foods and later was a residential painter. He was a veteran of the US Army serving in Korea during the Vietnam era.He enjoyed painting, listening to 60's and 70's music and was an avid fisherman.A graveside service will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday, September 19,2011 at Carolina Memorial Park conducted by Revs. Phil Roberts and William Moody. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Cabarrus County Honor Guard. At other times the family will be at the residence.He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Rose Ray of the home, one son, Del-Shannon Ray of the home, four daughters, Tammy (Vincent) Rogers, Sonja (Chris) Zimmerle, Rebecca Phillips and Melody Ray all of Kannapolis, two brothers, Dennis (Ann) Ray of Concord and Wayne (Carolyn) Ray of China Grove, two sisters, Kay (Tommy) Wilson of Cordova, NC and Cynthia Williams of Kannapolis and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Leslie Williams." The family would like to give a special thanks to Hospice and a special sister in law for their kindness and consideration."The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28083.Whitley's Funeral Home is serving the family of Mr. Ray.
