Obituary: David Hunter Cherry, Jr. , 72, died peacefully in Salisbury, NC on November 24, 2015 after a long and courageous battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. He was lovingly surrounded by his wife and caregiver, his two daughters, and his sister. David is survived by wife, Linda Marie Beaver Cherry, his daughter, Amy Leigh Cherry McLaughlin and husband David Scott McLaughlin of Elon, NC, daughter Lora Michelle Cherry Abdou and husband Jeff Abdou of Charlotte, NC, two sisters Nadine Cherry of Landis, NC and Cora Mae Compton of Troutman, NC, and brother Glenn Cherry of Landis, NC. His brother, Donald Rumple, preceded him in death. David is survived by six grand-children that he adored: David Wayne McLaughlin (23), Emily Marie McLaughlin (20), Rachel Francine McLaughlin (20), Sarah Ruby McLaughlin (9), Nathan Joseph Abdou (13), and Peter Marcus Abdou (11). David was born on August 25, 1943 in Mooresville, NC to David Hunter Cherry, Sr and Velma Teague Cherry. Velma Cherry passed away during his infancy. His father married Evelyn Teague who raised him as her own. David graduated from Landis High School in 1961. He graduated from the University of Charlotte in 1973 with a degree in Education. He was a teacher at Knox Junior High in Salisbury, NC for 20 years and then was a teacher at Northwest Cabarrus Middle School for 10 years. He retired at the age of 62 and enjoyed spending time at home in China Grove working in the flower gardens, on family genealogy, and spending time with his grandchildren. He published a book entitled Cousins By the Dozens. David and Linda raised their two daughters in Kannapolis, NC before moving to China Grove, NC in 1984 where they remained until moving to Salisbury, NC in 2015. David was an active member at Trinity United Methodist Church for most of his adult life. A memorial service is scheduled at Trinity United Methodist Church, Kannapolis, NC on November 29, 2015 at 2pm with visitation following the service at 3pm. All are welcome to attend and celebrate David's life.
