Obituary: David Lee (Wimp) Wike, age 77, died Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at his home after a serious illness of one year. He was born April 11, 1932 in Cabarrus County, NC, the son of the late J.A. (Atlee) Wike and Daisy Lewis Wike. He was a 1952 graduate of Winecoff High School. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1952 and eventually became a part of the Thunderbirds Air Team. He was also the first NCO to be asked to do a second tour with the team. After 20 years in the Air Force he went to work as a tractor trailer driver for UPS and was member of the Teamsters Local #71. He was raised to be a Master Mason at Yokota AFB in Japan on February 25, 1965 . After he retired to Concord he transferred his membership to Cannon Memorial Lodge #626. He was also a proud member of Wright G. Campbell #181, Order of the Eastern Star. David was an active member for many years in the Republican Party. He had a deep love for politics and could discuss them for hours. He also served as a precinct chair for his voting district for numerous years. Some of his fondest memories were the many years he played Santa Claus for his church, Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, and for other churches, groups, or even individuals that wanted a visit from Santa. These memories always brought a smile to his face. His activities and accomplishments were many and he made friends wherever he want. He truly never met a stranger. In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by a sister, Jean Earnhardt. The funeral service will be 2:30 P.M. Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, Concord, NC officiated by the Revs. Brenda Newman and Dave Cash. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC with masonic rites by Cannon Memorial Lodge #626 and military rites by the U.S. Air Force. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, February 19, 2010 at Whitley's Funeral Home, Kannapolis, NC. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Nancy Jenkins Wike; a daughter, Carol Maxwell & husband, George of Concord, NC; two sons, Michael Wike & wife, Brenda of California and James Wike & wife, Susie of HickoryNC; 12 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Kay Morris & husband, Tom and Brenda Brown & husband, Richard, both of Concord, NC; and a special friend, Barbara Bullock and his beloved pet, Sugar. The family would like to thank Amy, Beth, and Tiffany of Hospice; Dr. Gerig and his nurses, Stacy and Ginger; Dr. Patel with Ardsley Medical Group; his masonic brothers from Cannon Lodge; the eastern star members of Wright G. Campbell; Richard & Patti Secoolish; close neighbors, and the many others who took the time to call or email their prayers, love, and support.
