Delray Gainey

Obituary: Delray Gainey, age 62, passed away on Sunday, November 15, 2015 at Tucker Hospice House, Kannapolis, NC after several months of declining health. He was born May 31, 1953 in Darlington County, SC, the son of the late Luther Gainey and Lois Hayden Gainey. Delray was employed with Gerdau Ameristeel, Charlotte, NC for twenty-five years. His family fondly remembers his love of reading, cooking, fishing, and playing chess. He especially loved spending time with his family. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force having served most of his enlistment at Shaw AFB, Sumter, SC. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a son, Shawn Gainey; a brother, Dennis Gainey; and a sister, April Richardson. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at the National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC officiated by Rev. Mike Davis. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM Wednesday at Whitley's Funeral Home, Kannapolis, NC prior to the service. Survivors include his wife, Monnie Windham Gainey; his children, Cassie Jennings, Brandon Gainey, James Gainey, Lee Gainey, and Caleb Gainey; his siblings, Kent Gainey, Melanie Dukes, and Donna Gainey; two grandchildren, Destiny Gainey Jennings and Jermayne Wade.
