Obituary: Landis, NC- Dorian "Dennis" Sheets, age 68, died Monday, February 25, 2013 at his home after a period of declining health. He was born February 22, 1945 in Cabarrus County, NC, the son of Clara Kilby Sheets of Millers Creek, NC and the late Cecil Sheets. He was a 1963 graduate of West Wilkes High School, Wilkesboro, NC attended Rowan Tech College and CPCC. Dennis was owner & operator of Dennis's Auto Service, Landis, NC for forty years. In earlier years he had worked for the former Cannon Mills Company in the garage. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict and later the Army Reserves. He was a member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church, Landis, NC where he played the "Dobro" (similar to a steel guitar). He thoroughly enjoyed playing Gospel and bluegrass music and looked forward to going to fiddles conventions in various states to compete over the years. In addition to his father, he is preceded in death by one brother, Elbert Sheets. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday, February March 1, 2013 at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Hazel Rollins and Rev. Mitchell Cook. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove, NC with military rites conducted by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, February 28, 2013 at the funeral home. Survivors include his wif e of 34 years, Brenda McCrary Sheets; three sisters, Lorene Sheets of Millers Creek, NC, Delta (Ron) Russell, N. Wilkesboro, NC, and Joan (Richard) Caudill of Hayes, NC; three nieces; one nephew; and one great-niece. The family would like to thank the V.A. Oncology staff at the V.A. Medical Center for their steadfast and loving care given to Dennis during his illness.
