Dolores Dobson Smith, 89, passed from a world of pain to rest safely in the arms of Jesus on Monday, April 14th, 2025.
A lifelong resident of Cabarrus County, Dolores was born on August 4th, 1935, to John Thomas Dobson and Ola Lee Harris Dobson, both now deceased. She was raised with four siblings in the Brown Mill Hill section of Concord. Dolores was a 1953 graduate of Hartsell High School. As a child, she attended West Concord Baptist Church.
On June 30th, 1957, Dolores married the love of her life, Carl Bernard Smith, with whom she shared marriage and family for 67 years. Three children were born to their union…Matt, Joe and Tracy. She joined Gilwood Presbyterian Church, and was a lifetime member of Presbyterian Women.
Dolores was initially employed as a secretary/receptionist at Piedmont Chevrolet of Concord. As her family grew, she settled into the roles of housewife and mother. She was a Den Mother to Cub Scout Pack 161 and also assisted with a Brownie troop while her children were in Scouting. After her children were grown, she volunteered as secretary/receptionist for Gilwood Presbyterian Church, which evolved to a permanent position in which she served for nearly 25 years.
In addition to her parents, Dolores was predeceased by sisters Retha and Virginia, brothers Jerald and Baxter and daughter, Tracy. She is survived by her husband Bernard, Sons Matt and Joe, a brother-in-law, Phillip Walters, a son in law Chuck Bridgers, and many nieces and nephews.
A service of remembrance will be held on Thursday, April 17th at Gilwood Presbyterian Church, 2993 Odell School Road in Concord with Pastor Katie Perkins Sloan and Pastor Alan Buckner. The family will receive friends at 2:00pm, with the service to follow in the church sanctuary at 3:00pm. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to Gilwood Presbyterian Church Building Fund, or to Hospice of Cabarrus County. Whitley Funeral Home is serving the Smith family in their time of grief.
