Obituary: Donald Byron Garvin M.D., 85, of Kannapolis passed away quietly in his sleep on September 27, 2015 after a long illness. Donald was born Nov. 29, 1929 in Terre Haute, IN to the late James W. and Inez Andrews Garvin. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters; Mrs. Joe (Marian) G. Conrad, Betty Garvin, Becky Orman and a half-brother Bob Garvin. Donald was a native of Brazil, IN and graduated from Brazil High School in 1946. He received his degree from Purdue University in 1950, where he helped establish the first medical fraternity. He attended Indiana University School of Medicine, graduating in 1954. Donald served his internship at Detroit Receiving Hospital. He entered the Air Force in 1955 and was stationed at Cannon AFB, in New Mexico, serving as a flight surgeon. He began his general and obstetrical practice at the Maurer-Wood Building in Brazil, IN in 1957 and ran his practice there until 1970. In 1971 he opened practice in Bay City, MI until his retirement in 1994, when he moved to Kannapolis. He was Chief of Obstetrical Service, both in Indiana and Michigan. Donald was a member of the Clay County and Bay City Medical Society, the Phi Chi Medical Society and a member of Lane Street Baptist Church. He was loved and highly regarded by friends and family. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Testerman Day Garvin, his daughters; Mrs. David (Linda) Stearley of Centerpoint IN, Mrs. Michael (Carrie) Bose of Terre Haute IN and Jennifer Garvin of Chicago IL, his sons; Don, Jr. (Roxie), James (Pat) and Todd (Madeline), all of Brazil IN, Bill (Kathy) of Greencastle, IN and a step-son, Wayne Day of Albemarle. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. His funeral will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, Oct. 2 at Whitley's Funeral Home with Rev. John Palmer and Rev. Benny Creed officiating. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral Home from 6:30 to 8:30 PM on Thursday, October 1, at other times they will be at the residence.
