Obituary: Concord, NC - Mr. Donald Leo Fruehauf McAvoy, Sr, 78, of 2031 Stoney Creek Drive passed away quietly and peacefully on March 21, 2009 at the Bob and Carolyn Tucker Hospice House. Donald, Sr., as a loving father and devoted husband of 57 years was a testament to a life of kindness, love, honesty and devotion.A man of true character, he was born April 24, 1930 in Mont Claire, New Jersey son of the late George C. and Mary Ada Lamb McAvoy. At an early childhood age he moved with his family to South Jersey where he married his teenage sweetheart, Shirley Marie Thurston on May 26, 1951. As a young carpenter he built his first house in Linwood, N.J. only later to move to Northfield, N.J. where he and Shirley raised a son, Donald , Jr. and a daughter Stephanie Jean. He gave up his hobby of flying Piper Cubs for model trains and planes and joined his father in the retail business with McAvoy's Men's and Women's wear on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, N.J. Later, Don, Sr. moved offshore and started and operated several other successful busineses along with his dedicated and loving employees. He retired in l983 and moved to Concord, N.C. in 1986 to be with family. He was of the Methodist Faith. He was a member of the Atlantic City Exchange Club and the Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce. He also was a member of the Navy League. He was educated in the schools of New Jersey and was a Veteran of Korea serving with the US Marine Corps. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Thurston McAvoy of Concord, NC., his son, Donald L.F. McAvoy, Jr.,of Windermere, Fl. His Daughter, Stephanie McAvoy Carr of Cherry Hill, N.J. and his six grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, George McAvoy, of Somers Point, N.J. and Sisters Joan Roberts of Linwood, N.J. and Jane Wichmann of Laguna Niguel, Ca. There will be a private Memorial Service to celebrate Donald's life at a later date. In Lieu of Flowers the family requests that Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
