Obituary: Donald Wesley Smith, 92, of Kannapolis and formerly of Flint, Michigan passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at his residence following a period of declining health. He was born July 29,, 1920 in Presque Isle, Michigan, a son of the late Starr W. Smith and Arlene McMillian Smith. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Smith, a stepdaughter, Phyllis Brawley and a grandson. Donald was of the Seventh Day Adventist Faith. He was a veteran of WW2 serving with the US Army Air Force in the European Theatre where he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the EAME Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars. He had retired from General Motors/AC Spark Plug as a tool and dye maker. He enjoyed skiing, reading and restoring old cars. Survivors include his wife of 49 years; Ruth Hidgdon Smith of the home, one son, Paul Smith and Carol of Minnola, Fla., and stepson Willie C. (Frances) Helms of Concord. Three grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Thursday, March 14, 2013 at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Harold Davis, Jr. Interment will follow in Carolina Memorial Park with military graveside rites conducted by the Cabarrus County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. At other times they will be at the residence.
