Donald "Don" Ray Sutton

May 18, 1934 — July 18, 2023

China Grove

Donald “Don” Ray Sutton, 89, of China Grove, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 18, 2023.

Don was born on May 18, 1934, in Rowan County, NC to the late Alex Sutton and Julia Webb Sutton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, John Sutton, Harold Sutton, Ed Sutton and Walt Sutton.

He had a personality as bright as the sun, and never, ever met a stranger. When he met someone new, he found out three things about them in the course of the first conversation, their name, where they lived, and if they knew Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. He was always looking for an opportunity to share about Jesus. His love for everyone around him made him a joy to be around and people were just drawn to him. He always lit up the room wherever he was.

He was a lifetime member of the American Trap Association, he shot trap as an amateur in the 1960’s and early 70’s. In 1971 he went to work for Winchester Western as a sales rep and covered North and South Carolina. He then shot as a professional. He set state and national records in shooting that remain unbroken today. After leaving Winchester, he opened his own business, Don’s Pawn Shop in Kannapolis, NC. You could ask him the value of just about anything and he could tell you what it was.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Doris Correll Sutton. Daughter Donna Sutton Chavis and husband Kenny, Grandson Parker Sutton Chavis. Also two sisters, Shirley Sutton Mull, and Judith Sutton.

The family will receive friends and family from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 24, 2023 at Whitley’s Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow and begin at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Whitley’s Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Ballance and Rev. Glynn Weatherby III officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove.
