After he got out of service they moved to Kannapolis. She worked as a bookkeeper at Gregory Motor Company and Central Motor Lines. After a nine year break to raise her children she went to work part time at Jackson Park Furniture Company for 36 years. When Rex retired, she resigned and they spent many happy years traveling in their RV. They promised the Lord that they would always go to church whenever they were traveling. They had many good experiences going to church all over the United States and Canada. Doris was better known as Mrs. Rex as he was so well known and had so many friends. After Rex's death and after 66 blessed years together, she continued to take the ladies out for their birthdays, concerts, plays and church activities. The Good Lord gives everyone talents. Doris' was not singing like Rex's, hers was mathematical. She loved the Lord and was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church of Landis.
