Obituary: Doris Hilburn Woodard, 87, of Kannapolis died Saturday October 18, 2014 at CMC-NE from injuries resulting from a car accident. Her funeral will be held at 2:30 PM Thursday, October 23 at Whitley's Funeral Chapel with Rev. Willie Rash officiating. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 to 2:00 PM prior to the funeral. Doris was born August 9, 1927 in Cabarrus Co. a daughter of the late Clarence D. and Mary "Alice" Griffith Hilburn. She was a life-long area resident and graduate of J. W. Cannon Class of '44. Doris worked for Cannon Mills for many years as a weaver and a sweeper until retiring. She was a long-time member of Centerview Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday school and was a "prayer warrior" on the church prayer chain. Doris was a skilled seamstress and quilter. Her heart and passion for sewing and helping others led her into her ministry of making and providing dresses to little girls in West Virginia for Christmas over many years. Her family fondly remembers her "burnt and ragged biscuits" and her love of working her daily crossword puzzles in the newspaper. Doris was a loving servant of the Lord, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and a friend to all. She will be dearly missed. In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her sister, Loretta Carpenter, her son, Matthew Dewitt Woodard, her granddaughter, Bobbie Jo Johnson and great-granddaughter, Jenna Alyse St. Clair. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, John Howard Woodard, Sr., her son, Harold Ford (Diane), her daughters, Jean W. Goodman (Steve), Jenny Bradshaw (Danny), her son, David Woodard, all of Kannapolis and her son, Johnny Woodard of TX. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, 2 sisters, Phyllis Hill and Bobbie Jean Campbell, both of Florida and many other loving relatives.
