Earl Baxter Lentz, Sr.

Obituary: Earl Baxter Lentz, Sr., 80, of Kannapolis passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Transitional Health Services. He was born June 5, 1934 in Cabarrus County, the son of the late Homer B. Lentz and Bertha Gilland Lentz. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Helms Lentz on July 21, 1998. Earl retired from A.L. Brown High School where he was a teacher for 30 years. He also taught at Bethel High School for 7 years prior to A.L. Brown. He coached basketball, baseball and golf for 23 years. He was a graduate of Catawba College Class of 1956. He was inducted into the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame and the Cabarrus County Sports Hall of Fame. He was honored by A.L. Brown High School for 51 years of taking up tickets at the Wonders football games. He was an avid Kannapolis Intimidators Fan. He enjoyed fishing at the Outer Banks and High Rock Lake in earlier years. He was member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Cheryl Skinner. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday at Whitley's Funeral Home. He is survived by 2 sons, Earl Baxter (E.B.) Lentz, Jr. and wife, Lisa of Kannapolis, Barry Lynn Lentz and wife, Ute of Kannapolis, 6 grandchildren, Carmen Lentz, Taylor Wetter, Sigrun Kraehe, Emily Sparnell, Jessice Sparnell, Coy Sparnell, and 3 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 1502 Concord, NC 28026, Kannapolis Education Foundation, 100 Denver Street, Kannapolis, NC 28083 or Kannapolis Bible Association. Online condolences may be left at www.whitleysfuneralhome.com
