Obituary: Earl Dwight Sloan, Sr., 86, of Kannapolis went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at CMC-NE after several months of declining health. He was born December 23, 1927 in Rowan County, NC a son of the late Arlie W. and Sallie R. Ketner Sloan. He was a lifelong area resident and a graduate of Landis High School and attended Gaston Tech. Earl proudly served the Lord and his country in the US Merchant Marines prior to going into the US Army in 1950. Earl retired from Cannon Mills (Pillowtex) distribution center in 1993 after 43 years of service. Earl worshipped the Lord at Jackson Park United Methodist Church. He was a master gardener and loved to fish, bowl for the Pretenders in the Senior League at Foxfire Lanes. Earl loved people and was well loved. In addition to his parents Earl was preceded in death by his brothers; Charles, Ben, Reese and Ray Sloan and Sister Arlene Westmoreland. Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Merle Dendy Sloan, five children, Kimerly Edwards (James) of Rutherfordton, Earl Dwight Sloan Jr. (Debra) of Kannapolis, Cheryl Cornwell (Chris) of Athens, Ga., Kelly Torreano (Scott) of Winchester, TN and Eric Sloan of Kannapolis. He is also survived by two sisters, Thelma Archer of China Grove, and Frieda Lou Stengal of Cedarburg, WI. Grandchildren include Benjamin Edwards, Melody Sloan, Miranda Sloan Farmer, Caitlyn and Samuel and Sallie Cornwell and Luke Torreano. He is also survived by his special aunt Ruby Martin of China Grove. He was anticipating the arrival of his first great grandchild, Tilden James Cornwell in April. Funeral services will be 2:30 P.M. Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Jackson Park United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Neal Brower. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Saturday in the church fellowship hall prior to the service.
