Obituary: Edward Young Sweet Edward Young Sweet, founder of Ed Y. Sweet Income Tax Service in Midway of Kannapolis died Friday, October 2, 2009, at Universal Healthcare of Concord. He was born December 1, 1916, in Iredell County, the son of the late George Edward and Julia Westmoreland Sweet. Mr. Sweet graduated form Cornelius High School and attended King Presbyterian College in Bristol, TN. He excelled in the sport of boxing and received a full scholarship to King Presbyterian College, Bristol, TN. Mr. Sweet was a finalist in the National N.C.A.A. Boxing Tournament representing King's College. He won thirteen Golden Gloves Boxing Tournaments during his boxing career. He was the 1938 Charlotte Observer Golden Gloves Tournament Middleweight Champion for the North-South Carolina state title. He was named the Most Outstanding Boxer in the tournament. Mr. Sweet was inducted into the North Carolina Boxing Hall of Fame in 1989. He fought in 150 amateurbouts in the mid to late 1930's through the mid 1940's winning three Carolinas Golden Gloves titles (welterweight in 1936 and middleweight in 1938-1939), a Southern States Golden Gloves welterweight title in 1935, both the North Carolina and South Carolina Y.M.C.A. tournament titles in 1936, and the U.S. Navy tournament middleweight title in 1944. Mr. Sweet was a Navy veteran having served in Norfolk, Virginia; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and Corpus Christi, Texas from 1943 to 1946. Mr. Sweet was a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy. Mr. Sweet was named an "Honorary Admiral" of the U.S.S. North Carolina in 1965 and escorted the battleship up the Cape Fear to her permanent site in Wilmington, NC. He was awarded the title "Honorary Admiral" due to his efforts to bring the battleship to Wilmington. He Was Assistant Recreation Director at Mooresville Mills and served as the Youth Coach and Boy Scout Leader. Mr. Sweet coached the Mooresville Little League Baseball team to city, state, and southern regional championships in 1952. The team won the honor of riding a free "Pullman" coach to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. Mr. Sweet's Income Tax career began at Mooresville Mills in 1949 as an income tax advisor to the mill employees. Mr. Sweet opened his own business in 1952 in the Midway section of Kannapolis. The Ed Y. Sweet Tax Service celebrated its 57th year of business this year. Because of his outstanding contributions to the city of Kannapolis, Mr. Sweet was presented the key to the city by the mayor of Kannapolis. Mr. Sweet was a member of First Baptist Church, Kannapolis. He is survived by his wife Flora Templeton Sweet; sons, Stephen Sweet and wife, Carolyn, of Concord, Gary Sweet of Charlotte, and a daughter, Ann Sweet Walker and husband, Neal, of Brentwood, TN, and two grandchildren, Kevin and Jennifer. Mr. and Mrs. Sweet would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Thursday, October 8th. The funeral service will be 3:00 P.M., Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel, Kannapolis, officiated by Dr. Thomas E. Cabaniss. Burial will follow at Glenwood Memorial Park, Mooresville, with military rites by the U.S. Navy. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:00 P.M, Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 101 N. Main Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
