Obituary: Elmer Jewel Barnette, 85, of Landis, NC passed into his eternal home at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis on Nov. 17, 2014. Mr. Barnette was born on March 14, 1929 in Coweta Co., Ga, the son of the late James Jewel Barnette and the late Jeroline Gaddy Barnette. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by 3 sisters, Ruby B. Smith, Dorothy B. Evans and Sara B. Mull. Elmer's parents were sharecroppers in Georgia until they moved to Kannapolis following his father's locating employment in textiles. Elmer was a good cook and a gifted architectural carpenter. Mr. and Mrs. Barnette restored an old house in Concord for their daughter's counseling center. They were very active in supporting the counseling service for those in need. While they were not able to travel abroad in mission work, "Living Water" has been their ministry at home." Mr. Barnette worked for the last five years prior to his retirement in 1995, in plant 1, towel sewing room at Cannon Mills. Mr. Barnette was a gifted machinist who designed a loom mechanical piece improving production and in doing so, received an award for his service from his employer, Mr. Murdock. Elmer had been a member of Lakewood Baptist Church where he was a deacon, Sunday School Teacher of the men's bible class and the married couple class. He later moved his membership to 1st Baptist Church in China Grove where he taught several years as an associate teacher for the Baker Bible Class and was also on the trustee committee. He and Mildred also served in the nursery. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014 at 1st Baptist Church in China Grove, NC conducted by Rev. Steve Wilson and Dr. Thomas W. Snipes. Burial will take place at Carolina Mem. Park and held at a later date. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00-2:30 before the service. Survivors include his wife, the love of his life, Mildred Franklin Barnette of the home; a daughter, Dr. Sharon M. Barnette also of the home; a brother, Lee James Barnette (Carol) of China Grove and a sister, Willie Mae Barnette Gillispie of Kannapolis.
