Obituary: Elwood B. Patterson, age 77, passed away with his family by his side Sunday, April 15, 2012 at the Bob & Carolyn Tucker Hospice House, Kannapolis, NC after a period of declining health of ten months. He was born March 6, 1935 in Cabarrus County, NC, the son of the late Carl Lee Patterson and Katie Mae Alexander Patterson. In earlier years Elwood worked with his father at the former Patterson's Superette in the midway section of Kannapolis. In 1961 he was a mechanic for Ned Jarrett's NASCAR championship team. In later years he was employed with Stop and Shop, Concord, NC and retired after 29 years with Merita Bread, Kannapolis. Elwood was an active member of Second Presbyterian Church, Kannapolis, where he was active with the Presbyterian Men. He was a hardcore racing buff who followed the late Dale Earnhardt, Sr. and later with Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Elwood was also Governor of the Kannapolis Moose Lodge in the mid-1960's. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by one brother, George Patterson and a sister, Daisy Mae Patterson. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at Second Presbyterian Church, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Lou Pfeiffer. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at Whitley's Funeral Home, Kannapolis, NC. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Roberta Baxter Patterson; a son, Kirby Patterson & wife, Susan of Concord, NC; two daughters, Shelby P. Marlow & husband, Larry of Kannapolis, NC and Teresa P. Parham of Concord, NC; five grandsons, Marc and Chris Patterson, Doug and Brad Marlow, and Brandon Hines; two great-grandsons, Jase Marlow and Tyler Brown; two brothers, Harold Patterson of Kannapolis, NC and Walter Ray Patterson & wife, Millie of Mooresville, NC; and many dear family members and friends.
