Obituary: Emma Bessie Phillips Billings Garmon, 89, of Concord died Saturday October 9, 2010 at her granddaughter's home in Landis, after a period of declining health. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, October 14 at River of Life Family Worship Center in Concord with Rev. Brian Rabon, Rev. David L. White and Rev. Ralph Adams officiating. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday, October 13 at Whitley's Funeral Home, at other times they will be at 515 E. Garden St. at the home of Danelle Howard, granddaughter. Emma was born March 25, 1921 in Royston GA, the daughter of the late Fred F. and Elizabeth Allen Phillips. She moved to this area in 1939 and graduated from Cannon H.S. in 1941. She worked for 35 long years in Cannon Mills Plant #1 Wash Cloth Dept. before retiring in late 1984. She was a loving wife, mother and grandma. She loved everyone she met and treated everyone with such compassion and grace. Emma left a legacy of faith, worship and great endurance to all those who were blessed to know her. She was a great church member of the River of Life Church in Concord and served as assistant Sunday School teacher, Senior's Group Leader and Prayer Warrior serving Pastor Brian. Emma loved her family, cherished her faith and honored her God by giving Him Glory throughout her life. In addition to her parents Emma was preceded in death by her first husband, Colan Billings, her daughter, Emily Colleen Smith and 6 brothers and sisters, Ruby P. Baucom, Omar Phillips, Elmer Phillips, Dwain Phillips, Robert Phillips and Julian Phillips. She is survived by her husband, Leo Garmon of Concord, her daughter, Linda Billings Sanders of Kannapolis, her 7 grandchildren, Crystal Overcash Fowler of Charlotte, Allen Overcash, Darren Sanders and Denise Sanders Webb all of Kannapolis, Donna Sanders White and Donya Sanders Sloop, both of Gastonia, and Danelle Sanders Howard of Landis. Survivors also include 24 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren and her brother L.T. Phillips of Columbia, SC and her sisters Katie P. Smith of Stanley, Gladell P. Adams, Betty P.
