Obituary: Mr. F J Daves of 1410 Huntingdon Road in Kannapolis died Saturday, July 30, at Northeast Medical Center following hip surgery. He was 95.The family will receive friends 7 - 9 p.m. at Whitley's Funeral Home on Monday. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, at the First Presbyterian Church in Kannapolis, with graveside services to follow at Carolina Memorial Park. Rev. Cathy George will officiate.Mr. Daves was born in Hickory on July 28, 1916, to the late F.R. Daves, Sr., and Anna Hefner Daves and was a longtime resident of Kannapolis. He was married to Ina Isabelle Parker, who preceded him in death in 2001. A WWII veteran, he earned many decorations as a member of a B-24 photo reconnaissance squadron that served in the Pacific theater including the Navy Air medal with three oak leaf clusters and Navy Unit Commendation. After the war he attended Milwaukee School of Engineering where he studied mechanical refrigeration. He retired as refrigeration supervisor at Cannon Mills after serving as president of the North Carolina chapter of the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society. After retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Daves gave back to their community as volunteers with the Kannapolis public schools, Christian Ministry, and the American Red Cross.He was a Master Mason and member of the Allen-Graham Masonic Lodge No. 695 A.F. & A.M. in Kannapolis. As a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church, he cherished, led and served his friends in faith in many positions, including deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher, and Scoutmaster. He is survived by his son, Rob Daves of Minneapolis, Minn., and his wife Louise Fowler; his daughter, Lida Daves-Schneider, and her husband Karl, of Upland, Calif.; four grandchildren, Nikolaus Baldwin and wife Aimee, of Charlotte, Andrew Baldwin of East Brunswick, N.J., and Matthew and Steven Daves of Minneapolis, and a sister, Elsie V Tilley and husband Ralph of Kannapolis. He also is survived by sisters-in-law Claudia Daves of Concord, Betty Daves of Kannapolis, Mary Parker of High Point and Nell Parker of Statesville. Survivors also include many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six siblings. Online condolences may be left at www.whitleysfuneralhome.com.
