Florence Merwin Fletcher Giauque

Obituary: Florence Merwin Fletcher Giauque, 93, of Concord passed away on March 19, 2011 at the Tucker Hopsice House in Kannapolis. She was a true lover of life, family, nature, animals, dancing, music and more. Born in Springfield, Mass. on October 18, 1917, Florence spent most of her youth in New Jersey with 10 siblings and her late parents, Winton Searle Fletcher and Florence Williams Fletcher. In her twenties she joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Alamagordo, NM, for three years during WW II. She married Henry James Giauque (born 1923, deceased 1979) and had five children, all of whom she is survived by: Lynn (husband Richard) Grubb of Myersville, Md; Beth (husband Charles) Doherty of Middletown, Md, Dene (husband Robert) Hocken of Concord; Florence Parkhill (formerly married to Ronald) of Concord; and Charles (wife Diane) Giauque of Middletown, Md. She is also survived by two sisters, Dene Fletcher Sturt and Beverly Fletcher Macri (husband Anthony), both of New Jersey. Florence has many beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren in Md., Va., and N.C. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews as well. She will be missed by her large family as well as many friends. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday at Damascus United Methodist Church, Damascus, Md officiated by Rev. Walt Edmonds. Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery in Frederick, Md. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior at the church.
