Obituary: Foy Berry Bridgers, age 89, of Concord, NC passed away on Friday, May 4, 2018 at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis, NC. Foy Bridgers was a native of Orange County, NC. She was the daughter of the late Newby Bryant Berry and Annie Hall Berry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Adams Bridgers, who died in 1977, and also by a sister, Ann Joy Berry, and a brother, William Edward Berry. Foy was educated in Orange County Schools where she was valedictorian of the Aycock High School class of 1947. She was also a graduate of the Croft Business College in Durham, NC. She was employed at Duke Power Company for 9 years, and later at Colonial Flooring & Acoustical Company. She retired from Durham Regional Hospital in 1992 where she worked in the Finance Department. Foy was a former member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Durham, where she belonged to the Glass Sunday School Class, participated in Primetimers, and served on a number of committees. After moving to Concord in 2006, she joined Gilwood Presbyterian Church where she belonged to the Pathfinders Sunday School Class and the Martha Dickens Women's Circle. Throughout her life, Foy enjoyed working with flowers in her garden and plants in her home. After her retirement, she learned the art of making quilts, and enjoyed attending quilt shows in Pigeon Forge, TN, Lancaster, PA, and Williamsburg, VA with her friends Jack and Betty Frei. She completed many quilt projects, including large quilts, wall-hangings, and table cloths. She made and signed a large quilt for each of her children and both her grandsons. Foy is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Ann Bridgers Hand and husband George H. Hand III of Acworth, GA, and by a son, Charles Adams Bridgers, Jr. and wife Tracy Smith Bridgers of Concord, NC; grandsons Steven Michael Hand and Adam Thomas Hand of Acworth, GA; a sister, Vyrtee Berry Hight of Durham, NC; a brother, Wayne Hall Berry of Hurdle Mills, NC; and two nieces Lou Ann Bridgers (Tommy) Fincher and Christi Bridgers (Dean) Stover of Virginia. The family will receive friends at Whitley's Funeral Home in Kannapolis from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Sunday, May 6. The funeral service will be held at Gilwood Presbyterian Church on Monday, May 7, at 11:00 AM with Rev. Nathan Wheeler officiating. Burial will be at Maplewood Cemetery, Durham, NC at 3:30 PM on Monday, May 7. The family requests that memorials be made to the Building Fund at Gilwood Presbyterian Church, 2993 Odell School Rd, Concord, NC 28027.
