Fred Pope

Obituary: Salisbury, NC- Fred Samuel Pope, age 73, of 115 Knollview Drive, died Monday, January 17, 2011 at Five Oaks Nursing Center, Concord, NC after years of declining health. He was born June 28, 1937 in Davidson County, NC, the son of the late George Royce Pope and Ida Estelle Ferguson Pope. He was a graduate of Lexington High School, Lexington, NC; his BS and MA degrees from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. In earlier years Fred worked with Merit Shoe Stores, Inc., Lexington, NC and Concord, NC; Royce Shoes and later Grant's Department Store, Kannapolis, NC. After leaving Grant's he was employed with Concord City Schools to work at Concord High School. In later years he opened a shop called "The Spring House" which he operated for many years. He retired in 2003 from Craftsman Fabrics, Concord, NC. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Martha Yount Pope; and a sister, Vivian Pope Ginn; and two brother-in-laws, Everette S. Hege and Dorsey Ginn. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel, Kannapolis, NC. Burial will be private at a later date. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, January 21, 2011 at the funeral home. Survivors include his daughter, Megan Pope Sloan & husband, Steven of Salisbury, NC; two grandchildren, Tristan Sibby and Elijah Eddie; one sister, Maxine Hege of Concord, NC; one brother, Larry Pope of Welcome, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews including a special niece, Anne Wilson of Concord, NC.
