Obituary: Gary Wayne Gray, Sr., age 73, passed away on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at Carolinas Healthcare System-NorthEast, Concord, NC after a recent illness. He was born September 22, 1942 in Cabarrus County, NC, the son of the late Robert Lester Gray and Leatha Stirewalt Gray. Gary was employed as a supervisor with the City of Kannapolis Sanitation Dept. for many years until his retirement due to ill health. Gary was blessed with the art of music. In his younger years he enjoyed playing his guitar and singing in numerous bands. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. At Christmas his home was known for having Santa and his elf for the community to see. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Janet Furr Gray; his son, Gary Wayne Gray, Jr.; brothers, Earl Gray, Robert Gray, Clyde Gray; and his sisters, Dollie Barringer, Faye Hyde, and Lois Kennerly. The funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, February 19, 2016 at Whitley's Funeral Home Annex Chapel, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Billy Carey. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:00 PM Friday at the funeral home prior to the service. Survivors include his daughter, Lesley Goforth; daughter-in-law, Connie Gray; grandchildren, Bradley Wallace, Courtney Gray, Devin Goforth, Michael Black, Brooke Gray, and Alan Gray; his great-grandchildren, Nevaeh Wiley and Kaydence Gray. In lieu of flowers the family request that contributions be made to help pay funeral expenses to Whitley's Funeral Home. On-line condolences may be left at www.whitleysfuneralhome.com.
