Obituary: Gary Wayne McDaniel, 70, of Takoma Park, MD and Kannapolis, NC, died Monday, August 20, 2018 with his best friend and wife, Harriett McDaniel, at his side. He was a devoted father to Meredith and Kathleen; brother of Carol and Tina and proud grandfather of Luke (who he referred to as "Bear") and Macklin (Mack). He was preceded in death by his loving sister Mae and brother Puller (Butch). Gary was born in Washington D.C. in 1948 to Hilda Mae and Puller Hughes McDaniel. Gary began his childhood in the Takoma Park area where he attended grade school and Montgomery Blair High School. Following high school, in 1968, he proudly served with distinction in the United States Army. As a result of his courageous service in the Vietnam War, Gary was recognized with the Purple Heart and honorably discharged. Gary's kind and personable demeanor served him well as a United States Postal Worker following his military service. He would remain in Takoma Park, raising his two cherished daughters. In 1998, he married his beloved wife, Harriett, and became the step father to two sons, Danny and Roy (Pat) and later "Grandpa G" to Dessie. In 2003 he relocated with Harriett to the Concord, North Carolina area. His leisure was filled with a love of reading novels and newspapers and dear friends who continued to endearingly refer to him by his nickname, "Groovy." Gary was a loving father, husband, brother, and a loyal friend to so many people. His family and friends are blessed with the depth of this love and loyalty for the rest of their lives. ~Until We Meet Again~
